We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Have you ever been turned off by a pairing or character by a specific fan or group of fans?

The memers who like it are pretty chill, and know what's bullshit, which I appreciate a lot. But I've encountered too many super bitchy, bash-happy fans and I associate it with an ex-friend. So yeah...I don't think I'll be shipping it anytime soon.

Do you have any deets? Because I ship prumano like crazy, but the worst I've seen is one or two people posting some passive-aggressive "friendly reminder that spamano is wrong because spain raised him" crap. Does the wank take place outside the pairing and characer tags?

...sliiiiightly. there are a few characters who've been gary stuified beyond salvation, and one in particular i am finding difficult to tolerate because every time i do look for fic with him all the other characters seem overly taken with him somehow and i cannot pinpoint exactly what bugs me about it.

it wouldn't bother me if it's matter of people interpreting this character as being unusually physically attractive, as i can see that, and in any case i am generally quite flexible on character interpretation on that account (like, i can believe in both a fic where character A is very beautiful, and one in which character A is considered rather ugly or plain, it can go either way)... but something about it lately inevitably reads to me like this character is intended as an open self insert for you, the reader, and the whole thing is wishful thinking that other characters b, c, d, e, and so forth all have this unspoken longing for you because yadda yadda and i just... eh.

i suppose what i'm saying is that more and more i'm failing to see the connection to this character as specifically THIS character versus a blank space for the reader. and as i feel extremely awkward and irritated with reader/characters type setups, it bugs me, and consequently i have not read anything with this character as the focal point in a long time.

and then there are a whole bunch of pairings that i might have had interest in, but only if it had happened either a way that i personally found entertaining and ic (well, ic per my interpretation), or if it had managed to at least get my kinks in, even if slightly ooc -- but as the people who shipped/wrote it never saw it my way and i didn't care enough to do it my way myself, my interest waned. not sure that really counts, i mean that's more of a failure to turn on all the way in the first place versus a turning on.

That one Sweden/Finland troll. They certainly haven't made me interested in the pairing, to say the least.

NGL, tumblr has made me much more annoyed with France and Spain.

I understand and appreciate the backlash against fans portraying France as a rapist and Spain as a pedophile, but so many of the tumblr crowd have countered it by Gary Stu-ifying the both of them. They deny every creepy, pervy or jackass moment they've had and make them out to be the Social Justice Sex Gods and tout around how France said "love is not something that should be forced on others!" (because France never lies, am I right) instead of explaining how France has had character development, and just because he shows pervy tendencies as a joke does not mean he would commit a rape for real or that rape is okay.

If anybody's getting annoyed with Russia for similar reasons, then I would understand completely (but personally, he's my baby, so...)

Also, where did France say "those who call themselves ugly do not understand they are the most beautiful person in someone's eyes" or however it went?

Seriously, it's sad I have to doubt whether this is a real quote or not.

What makes France fun imho is that at one moment he can be genuinely perceptive and understanding, and then quite the pervert and/or failure. Making him some poor little victim who's never ever responsible for anything less perfect he does? It totally takes his fun duality away.

Historical Italy. There's a group of people on Tumblr who write him as a sadistic bastard who murdered the smaller Italian nations when uniting the country, pretty much bathed in their blood and is a snarky bad-ass who only pretends to be happy and clueless. I'm so sick of it that I've lost interest in reading fics about Italy's history, unless I know the author/reccer.

I can accept a certain amount of Italy kicking ass, considering Venetian history, but I draw the line at murdering 90% of the Italian states.

Also, the general idea of "this character cannot ever be happy and clueless no no no not allowed" just grates something awful.

Hungary, and by extension AusHun.

She's already a fujoshi self-insert grrrrl power kind of character in the strips so it used to always be a strip by strip basis whether I liked her or not, because that goes very wrong very easily but I mostly edged out on like...until fandom dialed up the fujoshi self-insert to 11 and made her the most obnoxious holier-than-thou character that now I can't even read the strips and find her even a little enjoyable anymore. To be fair I haven't read any fic or fandom hc or whatever in probably two years because of it so maybe it's changed but yikes. Predictably ever since Himaruya's blog note during Halloween that she's crazy for cute girls I've been curious about her again, so maybe I'll like her again if I stick to yuri fandom.

As you can imagine only being willing to give Hungary a second chance because of the possibility of yuri makes it hard to appreciate AusHun (I've never liked PruHun) but good lord certain people have made it really hard to give it a go in general. Part of the problem is how it's shown in canon to be fair, but I usually try to console myself with the fact we've never actually seen them together when they were actually married. But fandom either overloads on fluff or makes them married since the 1500s because their love is eternal (or both) OR over corrects too fucking far and makes them angst buckets. Bleh.

PruHun -- too much Austria bashing and Flawless Stu Prussia

FrUK -- too much USUK bashing and suave, smooth, perfect France

RussAme -- Phyrriccomedy. 'Nuff said.

Nipan -- Kecen. Same as above.

USUK -- I still have a soft spot for it since it was my first Hetalia ship, but got sick of some fans's whiny attitude and their victim complex
