part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

I blocked "Recommended:" on Tumblr and they immediately changed it to "Here's a blog:" just to fuck with me

why the fuck do I stay there?

I hate that Tumblr basically accepts zero input from its users... ever. :/

Because they want money.

How does this have anything to do with money? These aren't sponsored posts from advertisers, just blogs that tumblr (very poorly in my experience) is recommending.

If they really wanted money, maybe they should provide the service their users actually want instead of adamantly adding and keeping "features" no one wanted or asked for.

they recommend blogs because they think it increases the likelihood you'll click on something new, and stick around tumblr for longer

granted, that seems redundant with the type of content and layout tumblr provides, but in the future they'll likely offer paid reccommendations for advertisers

they kind of did this before! Remember when there was a weekly "recommendations" page? and you could vote for blogs that you followed, and they would show up on recommendation pages with certain themes (history, fashion, etc)?

you used to be able to pay per week to appear as a spotlighted/featured blog.

Of course then they randomly took it away and kept all those people's money.
