We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

it always weirds me out when people put famous anime like Sailor Moon or BeruBara or Heidi or Fist of the North Star or Lupin the Third in this weird "only for dedicated obsessed fan" ghetto and are surprised when they make huge numbers because all that shit was literally on national Italian tv for years. Like we grew up with it.

My sister isn't a dedicated anime fan, she doesn't give a damn, but she watched all the old Sailor Moon series back and forth when she was a child and I'm reasonably sure she used to own at least one of those magical gem holder compact things (sorry I don't know how those are called, I was never into magical girls).

Here admitting that you like anime isn't some kind of shameful confession of a weeabo, it's akin to admitting that you were indeed a child at a point. Hell, not even that: Italian culture has much less of a stigma against adults reading comics, because we have a decent tradition of comics dealing with adult themes, so an adult with, say, the BeruBara manga on their shelf doesn't look that weird. It's filled with thirty-years-old wearing Lupin the Third t-shirts over here, and the only objection I've heard is "why are the Jigen ones so common when Goemon was clearly the coolest character" (then again, Italian men are huge manchildren, but that's a rant for another time).

(also the coolest character was Margot/Fujiko)

Anime used to be much cheaper than other kinds of animation, so commercial tvs just filled all their allotted children programming time with it. Some stuff was heavily censored tho. I'm reasonably sure this holds true for some other countries too.

I feel like this is something from the US? Being an American, I don't recall seeing a lot of Sailor Moon merchandise being advertised (at the time). Maybe I wasn't seeing enough ads. /shrugs

Yeah but you're living in an age when it's more than easy to google and find out how widespread Sailor Moon was, so it'd be weird for you to insist that it wasn't a big anime?
