part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

when i first drew Eduardo, i wasn’t thinking or taking it seriously [i still don’t], it was for fun, i just wanted to see how it would look a personification of my country, and i never thought it would be THAT big. Second: If Mexico was a gender it would be male, totally, why? because i know my country and i feel that mexico has more male energy than female

why do Latin fans say shit like this

tbh i don't see a problem with it? i'm guessing your issue is the last bit, about 'male energy' but i don't see a problem. when i think about whether a country seems better suited to male or female personification to me, it's also like that. quite subjective, of course, and others might assess that 'energy' differently than i do.

had the sentiment been more like 'mexico has male energy because mexico is STRONG and being a female personification would imply WEAKNESS' then i would have a problem with it, but as it is, i don't see the issue.

/sa sorry for the repetitious phrasing, i'm apparently more tired than i'd thought

yeah, that's how I read it too - more of a "it feels more like a male than a female" without any positive or negative judgment implied either way, just a little bit awkwardly phrased, which makes sense if the person isn't a native speaker.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people in the Latin fandom had the "my country is TOO STRONG to be a female" opinion tho, people did in the past - but it's not just Latin fen, I remember the massive wanks with (very few, luckily) Hungarian fen about how Hungary can't be a woman because women are weak and Hungary is a warrior country and can't be weak, or the disgraceful story of those Polish fen whining about Poland being "too girly".

Actually, a lot of Polish fans see Poland as a girl and they were outraged that Poland was originally intended to be the first female character, but was changed to male.

The idea that an effeminate man is inherently "worse" than actual girl is not an uncommon mentality...

But in Hetalia quite many men are pretty... "unmanly". Even the ones who look big and strong. They whine, scream, are scared, are nervous and weak when they love someone, like to do cross stitch work etc. And for example Hungary is female but she the most "manly" country of all of them.

Mexico could be a man, but he could be a man who giggles and loves to sniffle flowers and follow butterflies etc.

outsider opinion here, but i would probably be more interested in a kickass lady mexico than a tamer man mexico
