part 353 whalers on the moon
We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.
Enjoy part 353!

I just want to say, don't necessarily believe what you see on the tag because people were literally forming rumors seconds after we knew something was amiss, before con staff briefed us on the situation.
Basically, the hotel/convention center management decided that it was within their rights to shut down the con because of some breach of contract on dashcon's part. They would not tell us what exactly it was- but, they were demanding the money to keep the con operating, basically.
brb responding to posts itt, feel free to ask me questions

I've been to this convention center before and they usually host professional things- trade shows/expos and stuff like that. I don't think they've ever held a nerd con before so the assessment that the hotel mgmt "did not know what they were getting into" is probably pretty accurate.
I don't know what it was that they considered a breach of contract. but, the fact that they were so vague about it makes me think it was a more complicated issue than "Dashcon didn't cough up the money soon enough."
Anybody whose hotel room was being funded by the con was also in danger of being kicked out. Which isn't cool, I don't care how much you hate tumblr or dashcon or the superwholocks or whatever. People paid to go to this con, some traveled far, and were understandably upset at the danger of it being closed.
That's pretty much all I know of it.

But I agree with you on the last point, I saw a lot of wank along the lines of "why would the congoers just suddenly hand over a bunch of money like that!!" and I think the answer is pretty obvious. My friends flew over there from D.C. and I'm sure they'd be pissed if they were suddenly kicked out after travelling so long.
Yeah yeah, under ideal circumstances the money could go to a better cause, but I think in that situation "not sleeping on the street" becomes a priority.
