part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

the awkward moment when the German cultural exchange student living with my neighbors is scream-singing Deutschland Uber Alles right now

is that really awkward? it's their anthem, they just did something the whole country is proud of that they haven't managed to do since before unification, let them be excited and scream and sing all they want. nothing wrong with pride in your country.

It might be a part of the song the anthem comes from,
but sadly that part was misused by the Nazis, so the context makes it awkward.

Otherwise it would still be seen as an mostly innocent drinking song about an unified Germany.

It's considered annoying and rude when sports fans-of any sport- sing loudly or act stupid because their team won. It's a common occurrence, but it still makes regular people :\

And I guess if anon can hear them they're being pretty loud...

In addition to what the others said: The official anthem is the third stanza (The part that starts with "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit"). The part the exchange student sang is the first stanza, which most Germans don't even know completely. Sing this one in Germany, and there will be almost no doubt to everyone around you that you're a neo-nazi.
