We weren't at first. Our rulers were married and we had an alliance starting in 1386, but we weren't a united Commonwealth for nearly 200 more years.

[Except the time that he was a colony, but he didn't have control over that, and once he was old enough to realize what was going on, he ended it, too.]

At the time we were both just starting out, but several of the powers around us were more established and perfectly willing to expand by attacking us. Neither of us would have lasted long on our own.
[So, basically, it made sense at the time. Looking back on it he's not sure if that's a good enough reason, but that's always the case with hindsight.]
It's hard to describe when you started out in such different circumstances.
