The Boneless Bird of Paradise

In 1522 a ship, part of Magellan's around-the-world expedition and now its sole survivor, brought a rich cargo of spices into Seville harbour and also the skins of some fabulously feathered birds. These feathers were the most beautiful that men had ever seen. They were long and silky, and glowed and shimmered with yellows, oranges and greens. The birds themselves were as light as swansdown and seemed to have neither bones, flesh nor feet. The beauty of these strange birds excited everyone's interest, particularly the Spanish naturalists who examined them. One said that the birds must live on dew and the nectar of spice trees and they must certainly be immortal. Another said that because of their lack of feet they were doomed to spend their whole lives on the wing, never resting for a moment. Others said that they probably did rest by hanging from the trees by their long tail feathers. They all agreed that the birds were completely weightless and feetless and probably came from the Moluccas. [where??] Some said, however, that this was untrue and they could only have come from Paradise.

From then on the legend grew and grew and the bird of Paradise became a bird of God whose special duty it was to protect the warrior in battle. From time to time unpopular naturalists suggested that the birds not only had bones and feet which had been removed but were merely brightly coloured members of the crow family.

No one, of course, believed this, particularly the Dutch and Portuguese ship owners whose crews were bringing back birds of Paradise by the dozen. Ladies were buying them at very high prices to make into hats.

This strong belief in the boneless bird of Paradise continued without faltering for three hundred years, although in fact several people knew or had guessed the truth. The mystery wasn't completely solved until the nineteenth century when René Lesson, a member of the crew of a French ship searching for a lost explorer, had spent thirteen days in New Guinea. There he saw many living birds of Paradise and he was fascinated by their beauty. When he returned to France he published a book describing how he had seen the natives prepare them for market by removing the bones and certain parts of their skin. They stretched the carcass on a frame and rubbed wood ash into it to harden and preserve it while the framework held the bird in shape. When it was finished it was the light, airy, beautiful creature that was known all over Europe - so at last this particular legend was shattered.

It doesn't let me read the article but I'm under the impression that "single men who masturbate to anime" is basically rightwing speak for "paedophiles and other sex offenders"
