Re: older anime dubs

There's an ancient dub of Rose of Versailles ("Lady Oscar") from the late Eighties/early Nineties which is pretty awesome because a) the network execs didn't realize most of those cheap "children's cartoons" they had just bought to fill up afternoon hours were actually more along the lines of "teenager shows" until the mid-Nineties and this dub is from earlier, so I saw the first run of Lady Oscar completely uncut and b) the italian dub actors were AMAZING. Again, anime was pretty new at the time and there wasn't yet a widespread market for dubbed cartoons aside from American ones like Bugs Bunny that were however a completely different thing, so they just went with the same dubbers they used for serious Hollywood movies and it shows. I still have trouble accepting Oscar's and André's voices aren't the original ones, that Italian first dub is just how they sound to me when I read the manga, too.

Then the network execs woke up, realized how SCANDALOUS it was, cut out the SCANDALOUS parts and redubbed it with voices that weren't nearly as cool :(

(I'm not the only Italian still obsessed with Rose of Versailles' epic first Italian run, ok?, there are still Lady Oscar fanclubs. Like I was looking for a scene in the anime in which Oscar and André talked and I found like fifteen AMVs)

One day I'll write one long and cool essay about the curious history of anime in Italy. It's actually kind of interesting.
