I think a lot of people got less active when the current tumblr fandom culture rolled in. Or just left and found other interests.
I've become less active myself because of the change in the atmosphere of fandom. Fandom is no longer as fun as it used to be, now that it's too busy policing and accusing itself to enjoy anything, or let others enjoy things. Fandom used to be a wide open sandbox, you could always find a corner to build to your own particular tastes. But now it feels like you're confined, there are too many rules, and heaven forbid gasp someone somewhere can't handle the existence of your sandcastle and also apparently can't be bothered to idk maybe not look at it and go elsewhere in the sandbox so HOW DARE YOUUuuuuuuuu. Don't you know you can't make things for yourself or people who have the same tastes as you, you've got to only make things that are """"safe"""" for EVERYONE? Your business is everyone's business now.
I don't bother checking ages as who knows online, anyone could lie and say they're whatever age they want, so I can't say for sure it's always younger fans who are part of this unfortunate change, but I would agree that the majority seem to be.
If fandom is more stress than fun, it's only to be expected that people leave.
