i feel like people who praise the old art of stuff like she-ra, thundercats, have nostalgia glasses on and only remember the brief instances when that cheaptastic animation actually stayed on-model.
...also they must be at least slightly blind, because those character designs were tacky as hell but i guess in context all 80s/90s fashion was tacky as hell so... sure. i guess she-ra is slightly less eye-bleedingly fug as lion-o who mostly resembles a mutant troll doll on steroids but eh.
THAT SAID i also think it's unreasonable that people jump to "oh you hate the currently on trend animation/character design styles THAT MUST MEAN YOU'RE A SEXIST PIG" because while i am sure SOME of the backlash people are that and just wanna see she-ra's ass, it's sure not everyone. and it's natural and legitimate that people will like the original art style of pretty much anything and will prefer it over variants.
someday, there's going to be some kind of hyper realistic cg reboot of steven universe and it'll be us as the crusty old fans bitching about it, probably under the guise of a vaguely feminist argument but really it boils down to the age-old hating change and hating the unpleasant realization that we're no longer in the generation that leads aesthetic trends.
