part 367 bears and wolves oh my

YOU DID IT, I'M SO PROUD OF YOU. Well, it's been a year. I hope it was a good one for you--and that 2018 is even better! And maybe we'll finally get that fansub of even one of the musicals... just maybe.

Enjoy part 367!

I write only for myself now. I don't feel comfortable in fandom, I don't agree with current fandom culture, and I don't want to engage with other fans. Even if my work doesn't attract antis, I don't want to fall into the psychological pit of being groomed by fandom into writing what other people want. I mean, some degree of the pressure to please or to conform is natural, but I think at this point that pressure has grown to stifling. Besides, I do have ambitions to publish my own novel someday, and so I have reason to be especially wary of the possibility of doxxing.

All that aside, my point is that you don't need fandom to write fanfic. Yes it would be a lot more fun to be part of a free and wild fandom community like we once had in the old days, but the loss of that doesn't have to mean the loss of writing.

And, since I no longer write fanfiction for an audience, it's become more of a relaxed writing exercise for me. Not that I don't want it to be good, but I don't stress over finishing things and just enjoy trying stuff out in fanfic space as a break from original writing. As for your questions, I feel like the only answer is to write, and to read. There's nothing you can do to stop being rusty and making badfic at first, but you have to do the badfic if you're going to get to goodfic. Don't be anxious, just dive in knowing that whatever level you're at right now, you'll get better with practice. I do think one of the unexpected bonuses from my pulling away from fandom is that I read a lot more published fiction than I used to, and I think this has helped me immensely.
