part 367 bears and wolves oh my
YOU DID IT, I'M SO PROUD OF YOU. Well, it's been a year. I hope it was a good one for you--and that 2018 is even better! And maybe we'll finally get that fansub of even one of the musicals... just maybe.
Enjoy part 367!

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 01:20 am (UTC)(link)i mean, i think at the time that they were developing this show, they must've been well aware of the typical fandom ship fodder and also well aware of how well received the gay relationship endgame in avatar was. there is clear, deliberate shiptease in the canon for shiro and keith (disclaimer: i don't care about this pairing, perhaps ironically because i find it exceedingly vanilla and cutesy and boring), and i remember in the early days when voltron fandom was still sane, some of the voice actors and other direct employees/members of the voltron staff would joke about ship names and stuff. i'm sure they thought win-win: we've got this great fan bait character dynamic that, as expected, garners a lot of attention, and if we make it official eventually we'll be on a kind of immediate moral high ground from all these other bromance ship-tease-y shows that people say are just gay baiting.
i'm not saying they did it just for the fans, mind, i'm sure this was also a story they wanted to tell - but i do think they must've assumed at the time that this was going to be a crowd pleaser all around.
and then the fandom inquisition plague spread. and suddenly there's a very stupid and yet undeniably powerful backlash reverberating through fandom, and voltron fans are especially insane about it. who could've thought this would be an issue when literally just a year ago a pairing like levi/eren was THE biggest fandom ship?
what do? i mean sure, you can say the fans are being unreasonable, because they are, but an unreasonable mob is still a mob. if you presumably have the bones of your ending already set up... do you just go for it and face off the swarming moral panic tribbles' wrath - or chicken out and maybe do a few tweaks here and there, cut out some stuff, la dee la everyone's friends the end?
tl;dr i seriously do think the show creators arranged this as a deliberate rebuttal to the fans - or rather anti-fans - because fuck them. and if that's the case, i applaud it wholly.
