i'm not even a sailor moon fan so it's not fandom loyalty speaking when i say... jesus christ that thing is hideous, thank fuck they did bring the original over in the end.

also, if trying to be "politically correct" (in their own words), and if transferring it to a more realistic animation art style + actual live action, why make sailor moon white? if the point of changing the races of some of the characters was to make it more diverse, surely it'd be more meaningful of a change to keep the main girl japanese?

but that's a minor quibble when faced with the extraordinarily terrible art.

because Asians and "Asian-Americans" are the "model minority" that don't / didn't need any "politically correct" representation, duh

They made it "politically correct" in the ... interesting 90s application of diversity in media which was usually:

white main character, then sidekicks that fulfill various niches that usually boiled down to: a disabled person, a black person, an asian person, and another white person to round it out.

Well that was a wild ride

lordy loo the animated version was so 80s, it looks like a bunch of he-man extras or that skydancers cartoon... and the weird "team angel" thing is the most late 90s thing I've ever seen

It's easy to look back from the other side of the anime/manga bubble and question the hubris of these people who saw anime, said "hey wow we could sell this", then went "no wait we should painstakingly remake it without actually learning anything about why anime appeals to people, YEAH"
