a hell of a wild ride so far. depressing, but also fascinating and well-written.

jist of it is: wang xiyue, princeton grad student researching eurasian history, goes to iran to try to access its national archives for copies of centuries-old historical texts. and gets arrested as a "spy." his wife, a hong kong lawyer and recent immigrant to the us, fights to get him out.
