part 343 pieces of discounted Halloween candy

stock up while it's on sale! Anyway: I. can't. believe. it. I really can't. I mean, I do believe it. So I guess I can believe it. But STILL. I've been saying all month that we'd get doodles, if anything, but--AN EVENT. An event! <>A real event. With ghosts! And mysterious happenings! And Hong Kong being a butt! I can't wait to see what happens next!

Enjoy part 343!

Why not say the correct thing, gross or not?

gross or not, one cannot disregard canon and mistranslate...

The problem is there's not an easy way to say that with the text given, because it relies on a grammar form that hinges on the fact you don't say the second half of your sentence. So I certainly don't want to be the one to go to the translators and say it's a mistranslation, because it's not technically, but it doesn't have the nuance "and that's why you can't touch me" because in English that requires too much of a leap in logic.

I have this problem with a lot of Himas phrases tbh, especially when it comes to events. A lot of the time the real meaning of a sentences is up is up for the translators to decide really and can drastically change depending on what bg info you have or what you yourself "think" it could mean. It annoys me to no end I wish he would be more straight forward with his phrases sometimes, I feel like he often hides in a sense of vagueness.

The problem with events is that they're all rushed translations because people want them as quickly as possible, and I understand I really do. The other problem is that in professional translations at least, the translated text tends to be about ~20% longer than the original which is fine for text posts, kind of a problem with bubbles and of course these are all fans volunteering their time.

To be fair to Himaruya this is just how the Japanese language works, he's not obfuscating (at least in this example, sometimes he totally does) it's just not how English works so it makes it hard for translators of any level to determine the balance between clarifying and adding.

Um I'm one of the translators well not for this event anyways but I'm a translator for Japanese (to German though not to English) and I know the Japanese language works like this but to me his Japanese is often worded very wishy washy and it would stay that way not matter how professional of a translation one would try to make of it. If the source is wishy washy the translation is not gonna get any more precise. It's just something that I noticed about his use of language during events.
That's what I wanted to say.

Oh I see! Sorry anon, I don't like to assume because I've seen the same complaint from people I know don't speak the language. orz

His Japanese is pretty weird, which is why I'm pretty cautious about translating this stuff to be seen by the public. Tbh I feel like I spend more time explaining than actually translating, haha.

No no it's ok dw <3

Same here, actually I never translated for this fandom because well fist there are enough translators atm who are willing to do the job and second I'd rather leave it to people who are at least native speakers of either Japanese or English.

But yeah his Japanese is sometimes.... really weird, I even asked my Japanese friends about this and they confirmed to me that it was at times a little "blaaah" (<- what they said)

<3 ;3;

Yeahhhh really at this point I'm only doing fandom translation if a friend asks or something because at least if it's one-on-one I can explain some of his weirdness (as best I can anyway). And good for the people who are willing and able anyway, god knows I wouldn't do this much work for free lol.

Buhyoooo that's a good way to put it!
