part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

Chai tea.
I hate coffee and I can get hot chocolate at home, but I still haven't bothered to get the means to make my own chai tea.

“There is the problem Americans have, in high school textbooks as well as on television, with their own past. It is as if we were embarrassed by the passion that made our Revolution, all those radicals in wigs and knickers. Revolutions are supposed to happen elsewhere in France or China, with deplorable consequences. That once upon a time we defied a king and dreamed up a Republic and wrote something as darling as the First Amendment is sort of a fairy tale…Our Founding Fathers were, well, so fatherly, weren’t they, and not at all like Bolsheviks, not a Robespierre among them. So get rid of Sam Adams: Dismiss him as a demagogue. Get rid of Tom Paine: Dismiss him as a pamphleteer. Invent George, so we will eat our porridge.”

I still like Chubbumerica and Chubburussia even if they're not canon. I get tired of all the ripped muscle and slenderness, y'know?

But I'm not going to pretend it's for anything but my own kinks and personal preferences.

I'm so confused. Is this guy trying to say the American revolution isn't taught in school anymore? Because if so, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if this is what that article is getting at but
As a merry can, what I'm most puzzled about is that we didn't read much - if any - Federalist Papers or any writings like that surrounding the American Revolution, even in AP US History. And we read a lot of shit in APUSH. That was the most sterile, lifeless material I ever took in high school, and the only thing that made the class worthwhile was the animated and invested teacher, even if I didn't always agree with her. I do remember the discussion that if the Revolution was a failure, the leaders would be remembered as horrible traitors and killed.
There's no need to make these men into saints, but we have other alternatives to forgetting about them. I swear, remembering our past better would clear up at least a third of the political idiocy going on in the USA today.

I think it's trying to say that in American schools, the American revolution is portrayed as gallant and just while when other revolutions (like France or China) are taught, there is a focus on the violence and horrible things that happened in them.

I... think.

I remember we did, but only because the class I had was "accelerated US history." The regular American history class didn't touch on anything controversial and basically whitewashed the entire revolution

Remember that you didn’t care about this a month ago.

Oh, America. Soon you will discover that you will always care.

Always.

Always...

What history book is this guy reading? I mean, the ones I read in high school talked about the ideals of all of the revolutions, including France, China, and Russia. It doesn't paint any of the revolutions as 'bad.' If the consequences happened to be less than the ideal, yeah, it said so, but that's just telling what happened?

And my history books in high school also talked a lot about the problems the US had after the revolution ended to. I went to a public school, so I don't know what that says about my district.

This guy is a twit posing as an intellectual.

+1

It's one of those things that are hard to miss.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was trying to say it's being taught in a dismissive, dispassionate way.

...It's not very good writing if it's leaving us all confused.

Sorry that we're kind of having America spam a day early, but this is the most American thing I've seen all week. It's from a list of words dictionary.com is showcasing.
And it doesn't really get any more APH America than that. (I was going to say English-Dub-APH America, but I don't know the nuances of his Japanese lines, if they're approaching this point or not.)

I feel so...

discombobulated by this article

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm. Well.

Yeah?

The American Revolution wasn't like the Russian Revolution or the French Revolution. As far as I know, the American rebels didn't order the execution of entire families based on their heritage or political beliefs.

No. I'm not a guy. You are not preforming to pop me a boner. I do not have the dick you are awaiting for. I am imagining myself as one of you because I am a girl and I wish to have sex with a girl. I want to you to to be in love and lust with each other, not me. I'm not in the background. Stop that shit.

I'm okay with performance as a kink but I'm tired of that being almost all lesbian porn.

How about accepting that it was a loss but a GREAT game with grace and dignity and continuing to enjoy the rest of the World Cup with the rest of us. There are still several good games to be had.
