We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

- Reverse. To be honest, I really didn't like America (the character) at first, but he somehow became my favorite character overnight. I still have no idea how that happened.

I can accept a certain amount of Italy kicking ass, considering Venetian history, but I draw the line at murdering 90% of the Italian states.

Also, the general idea of "this character cannot ever be happy and clueless no no no not allowed" just grates something awful.

Offside means a player has to have two opposing players between them and the opponents' goal the moment a ball is forwarded. The offside trap is when you intentionally cause your opponent to be offside by stepping back so there's only one player between them and the goal.

A bit of both at the same time. I remember seriously getting into Hetalia roughly at the same time when I read Crime and Punishment as a teenager and got obsessed with tsarist Russia, and also the fact that I got to meet my current Russian step mother around that time.

Come to think of it, I can't say I've become interested in any of the Hetalia characters because of an interest in the real life country. I always came to Hetalia first for the characters and secondly for the connection to nations.

i feel so petty, but i'm really upset that my girlfriend said she thinks jennifer lawrence is prettier than me.

i wouldn't care if she had said "jennifer lawrence is hot," but having her compared to me is what did it. she knows i have self-esteem issues regarding how i look. that was such an inconsiderate thing to say.

er... what was the context though? like did you ask her to choose between you and jennifer lawrence, or did she just randomly come up and volunteer this assessment? because if it's the first, then eh, you asked. if it's the second, yes that was quite inconsiderate and rude of her. perhaps she was only teasing, but still.

- interest in the nation of Japan as a whole led to him becoming my favorite character eventually, pretty much. I didn't think I would love him as much as I did (and at the very start, Italy and Germany were my favorites, along with England and America on the side, and later France and Canada) but somehow he surpassed all of my other "favorites" to become my top number one favorite, and I've always held an interest in Japan and its culture/history in general since I was young, so... yes. (I do blame anime and manga in general for that, but...! I don't regret it!) -3-/

she's the one who brought it up, but i guess i prompted her a little. she was like "who's hottest? jennifer lawrence is really hot-- and, there's you" and i sorta jokingly tried to be like "wow i can't believe you said that" and she was like "awkward!! but, i dunnooooooo!" in a teasing sort of "but i totally think it's true" tone

it's so dumb. i don't know why i couldn't just take it in stride and tease her back or something. i thought i was fine at first, but then i felt tears coming on and just kinda excused myself. maybe it's because she's undermined how i look in similar ways before in the past, like in that sort of "i prefer this but you're ok too" sort of way. and that always hurts a lot, even if most of the time she tells me i'm cute and she loves me. i've never said anything like that to her, and i never would.

this sounds so immature as i look over it again. ughh

that does seem a bit... yeah that's probably not something i'd say, or at least not in those words. i can see how hurtful that could be. but then again, it's hard to judge tone and intent since it's not like i know either of you nor was i there.

if i were you, though, i might talk to her about it. like, don't make it about whether or not you or jennifer lawrence is hotter, which is beside the point, but rather that you feel bothered by her making comparisons or joking about your looks because it's a sensitive spot for you. like, make it clear that it's not about necessarily needing to flatter you, it's about her respecting you. or maybe like the next time she does something like this, just ask her why she likes to compare like that, and point out that you wouldn't do the same to her because you wouldn't want to hurt her feelings, so she ought to be considerate of your feelings in the same way.

I like that thread about how fans "improve" characters.

What about the way fans can legitimately vilify the characters? Obvious example would be rapetruck!anyone, but do you have any others?

Obviously make America the most smug/manipulative/abuser/neo-imperialistic/jingoist bastard. Ever.

Okay I'm lying I haven't actually seen fans do the last two, but the first three yes and sometimes it's all in the same fic. Ick.

yeah... thanks anon, those are some good things to say; i wasn't sure how to approach it without sounding overly insecure or petty. i'll talk to her once i've had more time to cool off.

Others say which characters they ship them with, maybe add on some scenarios they'd like to see for those pairings, or maybe just talk about what you like about the pairings, whatever comes to mind.
