part 353 whalers on the moon

We've been here over a year now! I can hardly believe it! Dreamwidth's been pretty good, I'd say, with almost no downtime to speak of and all that! Anyway... how is your spring going? Or I guess it's almost summer, isn't it? Hopefully it's been well! I've been catching up on work and new movies, all very exciting stuff, I'm sure.

Enjoy part 353!

In Russia's case, in addition to being one of the few characters you might mistake for a 'bad guy', it's probably the getting-way-too-physically-familiar habit that he has. I'm thinking also of France and Italy as other characters who get closely intimate, and France has this problem with getting cast as a rapist, too. Italy... is too busy being a fanon uke to be a rapist. It's probably not the fact that he's a virgin.

Germany isn't presented as a 'bad guy', and he's more on the physically reserved side.
And so the stars aligned to cast Russia as rapetruck, and Germany avoided most of it.

Nah. I think it really boils down to personality. Germany is portrayed in a more sympathetic light than Russia.

Has Germany ever been portrayed in a negative light? Japanese bias...

That dish towel idea takes the phrase "on the rag" to new places

It was one of those things you have to do right and you cannot change under any circumstances or it won't taste right. They hadn't been doing it 'right' for a while.

is anyone else following this whole dashcon thing because it's horrendous and beautiful and I can't look away

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
details?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
from what the saner posts in the tag tell me, the convention center staff for dashcon in chicago demanded $17k in like an hour's time or they were shutting the con down

it may or may not have been a scam all along, and it just shows the poor management of the con

the tag on tumblr is a gold mine of cringey stuff though

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
its beautiful

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
"wAIT A SEC

WHAT’S THE DASHCON THING?

apparently there was a “tumblr convention” and they didnt pay the hotel up front LIKE YOURE SUPPOSED TO and almost got shut down and then proceeded to raise 17k in half an hour and its just really sketchy tbh and also who would wanna go to that"

wooooow

Either I'm having deja vu, or something like this has actually happened before. Probably with a different con. Where was that...

yes.... I was actually there. oAo;

I just want to say, don't necessarily believe what you see on the tag because people were literally forming rumors seconds after we knew something was amiss, before con staff briefed us on the situation.

Basically, the hotel/convention center management decided that it was within their rights to shut down the con because of some breach of contract on dashcon's part. They would not tell us what exactly it was- but, they were demanding the money to keep the con operating, basically.

that's because that is, in fact, what everyone was doing. It was three fingers in the air. Someone was doing that little whistle, too, that's what set it off.

I just want to remark on this because I saw that misconception go into action! Folks were saying the whole thing was a scam / dashcon never paid in the first place because the front desk receptionists didn't know what was going on. Which makes sense seeing as the con had not actually been officially cancelled at that point. I'm sure mgmt would've told them if the congoers were not officially welcome anymore... but it was up in the air at that point.

Re: ITT: strangest ask you've received on tumblr

[personal profile] quandtuniverse 2014-07-12 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Someone once messaged me out of the blue asking me to draw their OTP.

Not entirely unusual, but their OTP consisted of two OCs, and they sent me a link to a blog with reference pictures.

I followed said link only to discover a shitstorm going down between the requester and somebody else, full on posting long threads of vicious comments from DeviantART. I tracked down the DA artist and discovered the OCs were hers, that she explicitly denied others permission to draw them, and that she had a canon pairing with another OC and the OTP I was asked to draw was her NOTP. But the person who messaged me was fighting her over them and accusing her of being homophobic (the official pair was straight, the pair they asked me to draw was yuri).

It was incredibly surreal and I still have no idea why I was asked to get involved in this, given that I didn't know either of them, I was messaged on a non-art blog, and the requester wasn't even following me to begin with.
rugbrod: (what what what are you doing)

[personal profile] rugbrod 2014-07-12 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
anyway...

I've been to this convention center before and they usually host professional things- trade shows/expos and stuff like that. I don't think they've ever held a nerd con before so the assessment that the hotel mgmt "did not know what they were getting into" is probably pretty accurate.

I don't know what it was that they considered a breach of contract. but, the fact that they were so vague about it makes me think it was a more complicated issue than "Dashcon didn't cough up the money soon enough."

Anybody whose hotel room was being funded by the con was also in danger of being kicked out. Which isn't cool, I don't care how much you hate tumblr or dashcon or the superwholocks or whatever. People paid to go to this con, some traveled far, and were understandably upset at the danger of it being closed.

That's pretty much all I know of it.

Sounds pretty much what my other friends who are there said :|a

But I agree with you on the last point, I saw a lot of wank along the lines of "why would the congoers just suddenly hand over a bunch of money like that!!" and I think the answer is pretty obvious. My friends flew over there from D.C. and I'm sure they'd be pissed if they were suddenly kicked out after travelling so long.

Yeah yeah, under ideal circumstances the money could go to a better cause, but I think in that situation "not sleeping on the street" becomes a priority.
