Students protest possible changes to US History curriculum
(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)According to the proposal from Jeffco School Board of Education member Julie Williams, the committee would make sure that U.S. history materials "promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free enterprise system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights. Materials should not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law. Instructional materials should present positive aspects of the United States and its heritage. Content pertaining to political and social movements in U.S. history should present balanced and factual treatments of the positions."
Uhh do these people not know US history at all, or.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)The whole thing is terrible, but side-eyeing this part particularly hard.
Guess we're still ignoring what the atomic bombs did to Japan, among other things, like Vietnam and Iraq.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)no clue how accurate the last part is, but she still seems full of shit despite trying to claim she's not promoting censorship
Re: Students protest possible changes to US History curriculum
(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)Because you and your brainless ass were going to change it, you slime. You're just sad you got caught before you could get anywhere.
And really, how are you even going to teach history if you're avoiding civil disorder and social strife.
As someone who took APUSH... gender, class, ethnicity, and other not-so-nice things were definitely covered in old APUSH. And they should be. They need to be. Jefferson, Adams, Dr. King, Boston Tea Party, etc., were also covered, so I don't get her gripe that they weren't. I can't even tell if Williams is talking about APUSH before or after her proposals. Yes, she's very unclear, and definitely not someone I want in charge of rewriting curricula right there. And if she's worried we didn't take the 'right lessons' from the Boston Tea Party, etc., taking that in the light of her disgusting proposal, I want none of it. Fuck you, Williams.
The fact that this comes after we hear President Obama talking about being "pulled back by an undertow of instability" just smells wrong.

...yeahhhhh I'm a little creeped out by this. Wtf? Quite frankly history classes are already biased in favor of America because, well, we're in America, so to act like we need to make the teaching of history more "positive" toward America seems pretty damn shady. What the fuck does this "should present positive aspects" mean? Less talk about segregation and the civil rights movement? Of the heinous acts committed against the native people of this land? Of the consequences of our actions abroad?
The faults and injustices of a nation are exactly the part that students SHOULD be taught. The issues and problems and moral questioning surrounding controversial actions the US has taken are exactly what students SHOULD be discussing, debating, and thinking about. So trying to say that history needs to focus on "positive aspects" rubs me the wrong way.
At what point do we cross the line between "teaching" and "indoctrinating"?
I hope that parents speak up as well. I didn't have time to read/watch the full thing, but I'm really pleased to see that all these kids didn't just go home and do nothing, they're all standing there all day getting their message seen. And I hope that their families are supporting them and joining them,

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)Oh, we're far beyond that already. Pledge of allegiance, anyone?
But yeah, +1 to all of this. I bet my old high school history teacher is/would be mortified if he knew. He was always saying we need to know our history so we don't make the same mistakes again...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)I stopped saying it in high school. At the time I was mainly pissed about the "under god" bit, but now... it does kind of bother me.
+1

Re: Students protest possible changes to US History curriculum
(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)Because here's a good instance of when Tumblr's snowball effect could be put to good use. This shit should be talked about all over Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube - all those spaces where teens congregate. These kids should bombard this school board with messages - and they should pressure their parents, family members, friends, government officials, etc etc to do the same.
This committee needs to be bitch-slapped back to reality because I don't know which decade's ass they've shoved their heads into but in 2014 people are not going to stand for a step backwards like this.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-24 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)Not a lot of notes by Tumblr standards. Imo people need to be angrier about this and make more of a fuss to nip this sort of thing in the bud. Scrapping over the relative "problematic"ness of this or that fandom thing is one thing, but changes to the education system of this type and on this scale are a far, far more dangerous event.
I don't want to make a post about it myself but I'll reblog others' posts and hopefully there'll be more uproar about this in the near future.
