part 363 paper snowflakes

It's... December! I can't believe it's almost the end of another year. Time is weird. Anyway! There's been a lot of neato Hetalia news in the meantime! That game (that I can't get working but will look at videos and screencaps of so I can play vicariously)! The image of the first doll! The musical promo images!! What are you most excited for?

Enjoy part 363!

Perfect/pure/must-be-protected-at-all-costs = I'm pretty much guaranteed to loathe this character, unless perhaps this is pure porn and you're only setting up this slice of sparkly-sweet angelcake in prelude to smashing it to smithereens. I hate precious princess characters, I hate damsels in distress. Ditto the rarer but equally fucking annoying dudesels in distress (though that usually occurs in yaoi, where I can at least be like whatever just get to the dick already).

I'll make exception for Miyazaki and a few others who can pull off very sweet and innocent character types because their sense of sweetness is tempered with a down-to-earth authenticity - rather than some flouncy lofty piece of high-handed spun-sugar saccharine bullshit.

And I also hate when there's a character who exists to be The Girlfriend or The Boyfriend and holds no interest whatsoever aside from being the protagonist's reward for his/her great adventure. Especially when this character just about invariably pulls a tedious damsel/dudesel subplot.

personally I don't mind pure characters as long as they undergo character development and become more jaded in the end, or if 'pure' is only a mask

Evanescence - Bring Me To Life
Nicki Minaj - Anaconda
Rihanna - Bitch Better Have My Money
Jason Derulo - Wiggle

I like overly dramatic songs and 'stupid' pop, don't judge me

actually that's what I'm thinking, lol

and yes, the one I have jotted down something for is the one with the vampire, thought I also have something for the one with elaborated worldbuilding but the first one is easier to write

how are you doing instead? I am terrible at following people so I don't know anything you might be in fact drawing all the kinky stuff you think about and I might just not know

For me it's all about whether that quality of goodness can feel ordinary, unromantic, have a genuine scuffed-shoes dirty-nails hardworking everyday appeal. Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service is a pretty decent example of a very good kid whose goodness and innocence I could believe in and relate to.

But yeah, what you're talking about works for me as well. Also, when a character is sweet and kind and all but has significant other flaws and failings to offset that - Hetalia's Italy might qualify as a good example of this, being such a slacker and pain in the ass and childish/self-indulgent on top of being a sweet little puppy.

The more a character is treated by the author as sooooo SPECIAL and PRECIOUS and sparkly fancy rarefied untouchable unicorn in a crystal castle, the more I'm repulsed by the whole shebang.

Re: itt: ships you ship that you used to dislike?

[personal profile] romanon 2015-12-20 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I am constantly surprised by how hard I ship Bad Friends Trio/Romano. Like I ship the individual members of the trio with each other and with Romano too, but for me the true beauty of all those pairings shines when they're all in some sort of agreement in which they're all fucking each other. It's surprising to me because I almost never ship polyamorous relationships in which all the characters have equal weight. I like monogamy/one true love/"I might fuck entire cities but I only ever love you" as a trope. And yet with these four I can see one true love happening only when there's enough people to play a tennis doubles.

The Josie and the Pussycats 2001 movie soundtrack, minus like three songs that even I can't stand.

Ridiculous Eurovision songs. While I do have some discerning taste, I still grin happily when Bulgaria's Angel Si Ti comes on so it doesn't count for much.

Speaking of Bulgaria, I have an entire cd of Bulgarian folk music and I'm pretty sure I am one of the few people in america who enjoys listening to it.

Ooh, cool. How long do you think you're going to make it? Do you prefer to write on the computer or with actual pen/paper? :o

I'm not, I'm drawing the exact opposite (for work). But I'm fine, somewhat stressed out but that's just the norm and after this one project wraps up I should be free for a couple weeks for the holidays.

ok, so this one isn't a type of character as much as a type of character-driven subplot

a nice, hardworking protagonist A sees all of their niceness and hardworkery being destroyed by a character B who bursts in, does half the work of A for double the results, and everybody immediately trusts and likes better than character A despite the fact that they've know A for longer because B knows the meaning of spontaneity and fun! or B says what they think without thinking of the consequences! or some shit!

I loathe character B with a passion. Always and invariably.

just to clarify: I don't mind a nice foil character. In fact those are often my favorite ones. But I hate it when the narrative keeps on telling us the foil character is basically Everything That The Protagonist Isn't and So Much Better Than The Protagonist and The Protagonist Could Stand To Learn A Thing Or Two From Them because it's almost invariably not true, they're just dicks that everybody loves for some reason

also just to clarify: I always hope this subplot will turn into a horror subplot at a point. like it turns out character B is a witch thralling everybody and now character A has to enlist the help of a sexy vampire and a brooding but hot werewolf to save the world. I hope this even when the setting is a gritty crime drama

it actually just depends on where I am. on the computer I can write more without tiring myself out but I don't want to carry my personal laptop wherever I go and writing on the phone is still too weird for me.

I suspect it's going to be more along the lines of a collection of stories with the same protagonists, so I have no idea how long it's going to be.

it's always cool to have free time! you don't realize how great free time is until you have a job

Scenes/songs/pictures/etc that always make you cry

Writing a novel on the phone seems like some kind of punishment in hell. HADES HEREBY DECREES YOU MUST COMPLETE 10000 WORDS TAPPED ONE BY ONE FIGHTING AUTOCORRECT AND ERRATIC SCREEN SENSITIVITY EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. ADDITIONALLY YOU HAVE BEEN CURSED WITH GIANT YAOI HANDS HAHA YOU POOR BASTARD.

Neat! What's your worldbuilding book idea about?

I dearly wish I could go back in time and punch myself for wasting the good year or so I was unemployed/underemployed after graduation, which I spent moping around feeling sorry for myself rather than enjoying the last long spell of free time I'd ever have.

ITT: Ships you are surprised that you don't like more

(Anonymous) 2015-12-20 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
since we're on this topic might as well cover every inch of it

Are there any ships you would think you'd like, given your usual preferences, but just haven't done it for you?

What about characters you thought you'd like or are usually your type, but somehow you didn't like them?
