part 365 days in a year
Another maxing, another part! How are you liking the latest strips? I'm still hoping for news of more dolls (France? Canada? China? ... France?)--anything you're hoping for? I hope your summer (or what season it may be) is fun!
Enjoy part 365!

where did all the older fans go

(please don't say Steven Universe, Star Wars, etc)

Some of the earliest who left went to KHR and One Piece. Superwholock was a big one for a while. Many of those would later hop to Homestuck. A lot of the others left during the homestuck time, though none of them are still into Homestuck. I think Free! was a thing at some point in that era too.
Then for a while Jojo and Marvel Universe was a big one people were leaving for. Les Mis was one of the big ones in that period too. Gravity Falls after that. Shingeki no Kyojin.
Final stragglers all left with Yowapeda and Haikyuu. Despite many of them now being into Steven Universe as well, honestly none of the people that was in my original aph friendgroup around 2008 - 2010 was still into aph at that point.
There's a lot of fandoms they're into these days (Love Live, latest Fire Emblems, Undertale, Star Wars, Steven Universe, etc.), but they had fallen out of hetalia before then.
I don't blame them for wanting to move on, or losing interest. But I'll also admit to missing the group chats and lively community of back in the day. It's lonely being the only adult left between groups of 15 year olds, not particularly keen on hanging with the cosplayers at conventions anymore for that reason.
(The only time I mind is when people immediately start badmouthing aph the second they leave the fandom, which was quite a trend for a while, especially in the switch to homestuck being the popular fandom at the time.)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-13 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)and since people started losing interest in homestuck, then they were badmouthing it. disparaging of a past fandom is something i've started noticing over the past few years... people just aren't simply moving on to new things anymore; they have to be all uppity about what they used to like, implying they were stupid for liking it. i sort of feel like that's just putting on a front, and i agree with the one post that was passing around, suggesting that people have this attitude because they don't like who they were personally back when they were into that particular fandom.
it's weird to me because for me, it's rare that i stop liking something entirely. like, it's normal to gravitate to the freshness of a new fandom, and to mostly immerse yourself in that fandom's content, but that like for the older, or the less active fandoms never goes away for me.
i guess we're still in the osomatsu craze right now, or did people start moving onto something new from that, too?

many of my fandoms had such a positive impact on me growing up i can't imagine throwing them away or mocking myself, or them, for having once liked them
there was only, like... one major fandom like that I almost never mention anymore, and that's more because all the other fans were embarrassing and it's regarded as one of the worst fandoms because of that, so. but that was a special case
i wish more would realize you can still publicly enjoy your old fandoms while throwing away the parts of themselves they didn't like that existed back then by simply just... changing their attitudes? or something. actually, i wonder if another fandom migration would help with that, if they were that worried about being connected to how they were in the past.
Re: da
(Anonymous) 2016-08-13 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)that's something else that makes me sad. it's hard enough finding joy in this day-to-day stressful life without having to worry that everyone else might look down on you for what brings you that joy! i shouldn't have to feel ashamed of something that makes me happy, just because people have a dumb tendency to lump all fans together. although at this point it's like every fandom gains that encumbrance of being known for bad fans: hetalia, homestuck, steven universe, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ everything's an embarrassment to admit to liking i guess!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-13 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)I noticed the badmouthing stuff in other places too, it's sad, I wish people weren't so harsh on things they used to like. Or at the least didn't throw the entire thing under the bus the moment they find the shiny new flavor of the month.
I never really move on from old fandoms either. Or rather, I never stop enjoying series I used to like, though there's few I've liked to the extent of hetalia.
(As other anon mentioned though, I can definitely understand the sentiment of starting to distance yourself from fandom because of the fanbase though. MLP was one that quickly became one that I didn't want to touch with a stick within months, but I'll still say that the show itself is pretty cute and enjoyable. You're not going to see me draw SU either, despite enjoying the show, cause it seems people get caught up in wank for the most ridiculous crap.)
I think osomatsu craze is slowly over. At least I barely see as much from it as I used to.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-13 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)I've become less active myself because of the change in the atmosphere of fandom. Fandom is no longer as fun as it used to be, now that it's too busy policing and accusing itself to enjoy anything, or let others enjoy things. Fandom used to be a wide open sandbox, you could always find a corner to build to your own particular tastes. But now it feels like you're confined, there are too many rules, and heaven forbid gasp someone somewhere can't handle the existence of your sandcastle and also apparently can't be bothered to idk maybe not look at it and go elsewhere in the sandbox so HOW DARE YOUUuuuuuuuu. Don't you know you can't make things for yourself or people who have the same tastes as you, you've got to only make things that are """"safe"""" for EVERYONE? Your business is everyone's business now.
I don't bother checking ages as who knows online, anyone could lie and say they're whatever age they want, so I can't say for sure it's always younger fans who are part of this unfortunate change, but I would agree that the majority seem to be.
If fandom is more stress than fun, it's only to be expected that people leave.

I barely interact with "the fandom" anymore.
Re: +1
(Anonymous) 2016-08-13 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)I still miss fandom though, the way it used to be. I also miss the wildness and weirdness of fandom smut, including the stuff that wasn't my kind of thing but you know what it was good that it existed and that somebody got to let loose and have fun with their very peculiar fantasy in the safety of silly fandom crap.
Nowadays it's like some kind of church, everyone's anxious to voice their disapproval or root out a witch in order to prove their moral superiority.
Re: +0.5
(Anonymous) 2016-08-13 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)it seems like the younger fans get an awareness of actual social justice issues and want to seem mature, so they've taken that and warped it with policing tones to fandom. they think they're doing good by threatening what they see as problematic, not realizing that it's this behavior that's the most toxic thing here. it's always accompanied with a superior air that reminds me of a kid who thinks they're cool for doing something they think is adultlike, and it would be amusing if what they were saying didn't actually cause damage. they have a black and white thinking without an understanding of the nuances of fiction. but there are young fans who are coming into this policing fandom as their introduction, so of course that attitude's also passing onto them because it's all they know.
