i want to watch the chilling adventures of sabrina but i'm just wondering if it's gonna be as gory as the comics??! or if they're going to tone it down? m-muh sensibilities ;_; i only read a bit of the beginning of the comics and one scene still fucks me up to think about

That one's recently come into my radar, and sounds interesting! I've never read the comics though, what was that traumatizing scene? ;;A;;

there was a graphic scene where a character jumps into a lion pit and is torn apart by them (and it's repeated at least once from different angles with other details, in case you wanted a fuller experience!) while her lover, who influenced her to do it, watches the whole thing impassively and remarks about her in a trivializing way and was basically like "she loves me so much she had to go be dramatic about it", which added another layer to how disturbing it was for me.

there's more that others could possibly find more disturbing because it's not shy on gore in general.

Wow, that's pretty fucked up... I'm sure TV will have zero problems adapting stuff like that for our sadistic enjoyment. Though if it's one of those gratuitous violence with no substance, I might make a hard pass, it lies on whether the story is enjoyable for me.

i feel like they might cut away from it and just show the guy's reaction with the sound effects going on off-camera, but who knows. i don't know how violent netflix is comfortable with going in their original series.

i would give it a try if you're interested, at least. from what i did read, the storyline doesn't seem overshadowed by the shock-value moments but ymmv.

I'm definitely putting it on my list. My only experience with original Netflix shows are their cartoons, so I've no idea how far they're willing to push. I do hope they don't go too soft though, cause that wouldn't be fun either.

It's not going to have a lot of salem because the actress is allergic to cats

i'm just imagining them using a puppet for salem again and that is hilarious.

or wait, what if they have to cg the entire freaking cat. like for the tiger in life of pi - only it's just a cat.

They're using a real cat, so they're basically just... not going to have a lot of Salem. Bummer!

i dunno if it's that so much as they're going to do creative editing to make it look like he's near her, but there's something lacking when you think of sabrina not even being able to hold her familiar. :/

i'm just wondering if they knew she was allergic before she auditioned? is it really so bad that an allergy pill won't help? everyone knows sabrina has a cat, man, that's kind of important @her agent

Huh. So I went back to the twitter where I heard this, and then reread the source articles just to be sure, annnd it sounds like they overplayed it.

What the original article said was that there are 5 cats who play Salem, and that one of the cats gave her an allergic reaction with hives. But nothing about reducing Salem in the show.

I guess I spread the misinformation! :O Sorry anon!! I feel silly.

This... actually makes me more interested. I thought they were just playing at badass-cute, but if they're really invested in going straight on horror (regardless whether it's graphic) I'm more in.

Sorry if it's not your thing, anon! I'm sure you can ask how gory it is soon as the episodes are up.

yes, i think people like you who didn't know what to expect from the series will be surprised, hopefully in a good way. and the people who're pfft-ing it will probably shut their mouths quick IF the series isn't afraid to venture where the comics go. there's a possibility they might tone it down, but i'm not sure how netflix original series are about that. surely they're not as limiting as a cable channel would be.

i'm aware i'm an outlier when it comes to gore and i don't expect to be catered to when most people are of the opinion that the more gore, the better. it seems like there's a dearth in the genre for shows, so i don't want to take away anyone's fun!

and i don't trust other people's opinion on the gore because usually that ends up in me getting flat-out lied to, rofl

i'd be interested to see what you think after the show gets going.

Though I'm not squeamish I do think there's like... smart, scary use of gore, vs cheap gore. I often dislike gory horror not because I can't deal with gore, but because it's dumb like jump scares, the tension feels unearned and gimmicky and it doesn't last, or even tips over the edge into feeling pornographic or unintentionally funny.

That said, on the flip side my first impression of the trailer was that this was going to be 80% schmaltzy CW-style teen soap + 20% AHS-Coven-wannabe, and they'd be afraid to present anything actually uncomfortable. I don't like Riverdale for this reason; it kinda sorta wants to be noir but it mostly wants to be shallow and sparkly and fantasy bf/gf material which effectively cancels out all attempts at pathos imo.

I was definitely going to give this new Sabrina a couple episodes regardless, but now I'm much more hopeful that it's my type of show.

You can probably ask here or on forums or something for only spoilers regarding the degree of goriness, might help to ask for specifics like how much is shown on-screen and how clearly it's visible. Overall impact might be rather subjective, though. I'll be sure to post my impressions if I happen to catch threads about it.

yeah, the gorenography feel that sometimes comes out with horror is what sticks with me more than anything :S i think even this series has a smattering of that at times. not actual gore but the suggestion here: https://retconpunchdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/trussed.jpg but i feel like ahs has gotten in that territory sometimes, too?

also http://methodsunsound.com/when-archie-comics-met-cosmic-horror/

not from the chilling adventures of sabrina but the archie version (they both crossover) so not a spoiler

the writer of this and CaoS is also the writer of riverdale, but these are clearly horror-centric unlike riverdale; he's the creative director of the netflix series so he should have input on it not being really watered down.

now I want to read the comics

from what i read, i would recommend them, but i haven't seen that much to be emphatic. there are some aspects that are kinda ehh and the facial art can veer to the ugly side, but the environments have a good aesthetic.
