China is weird. Each time I was there, I regularly got an eyeful of guys hanging around and going about their day shirtless (fair enough, since summers there can be brutal thanks to the humidity).
From what I gathered, once guys hit their 40s, they can practically be divided into three groups: extremely skinny, skinny with a pot belly, or really fat (well, by Asian standards). There was, maybe, 1 guy out of 10 I saw who didn't fall into these categories. It was fascinating.

Meme, I just found a dead butterfly in the street by my house. I think someone ran it over because it was stuck to the ground. I peeled it up and now I don't know what to do with it. Seal it away in a plastic bag as a specimen to show people or give it a funeral in the compost pile?

Kingdom of Hawaii may still exist, challenges US over sovereignty

The CEO of the Hawaiian Affairs Office (OHA) has retained his job and gained public support to challenge the US on whether the Kingdom of Hawaii still exists as a sovereign country.

Kamanaopono Crabbe sparked an internal crisis when he sent a letter to US Secretary of State John Kerry, asking for a ruling on whether the Kingdom of Hawaii still legally exists.

The letter, which was quickly rescinded by the OHA's trustees, was prompted by the US Government's acknowledgment that the overthrow of the kingdom in 1893 was illegal.

Dr Sai said Hawaiians need clarification on the issue.

"What was overthrown was the government, not the country," he said.

Dr Sai blames revisionist history education for misconstruing local understanding of Hawaii's true status.

"A revisionist history has been taught here in Hawaii since the early 1900s that presented Hawaii as if it was a part of the United States when in fact there is clear evidence that it's not," he said.

"We need to address this because it will affect our people but it also affects everyone."

Dr Sai says if the Kingdom of Hawaii does indeed still exist, many historical treaties with nations including the UK and Australia would still be in effect.

The US may be in violation of international law if Hawaii is still technically its own country.

I couldn't find any Hawaiian newspaper articles on either. Just the Australian one. The letter was rescinded by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and apparently it was one person acting alone. They are all up for election, so it appears to be a political thing.

The article itself completely ignores the process to becoming a state (see: Puerto Rico's not sure if want so we won't for now and not pay taxes while still being US citizens)

So we had a big debate today in my theater history class about casting the roles of characters of certain ethnicity (or implied ethnicity) with actors who are of a different ethnicity. For example, casting Filipino actresses as the Vietnamese character Kim in Miss Saigon or (for a very recent example) casting actors of varying ethnicities as the characters in Aladdin, which is set in kinda-sorta-Middle-Eastern Agrabah.

What do you think, meme? Should casting directors only look for actors of a specific ethnic background for a character with that background? Or is it okay to go more for visual look than ethnic background? Or something else?

i'd say it's dependent on circumstances and also availability. but if you're going to be unable to fill a role that's written to be [ethnicity A] in the story, and are consequently obliged to use an actor of [ethnicity B], it would be in better taste in my opinion to carry this "colorblind casting" decision through to some other roles in the play as well, in order not to leave any doubt that perhaps there was a deliberate desire to replace [ethnicity A] with [ethnicity B]. does that make sense? when it's just the one role affected, it can give the uncomfortable feeling that that's supposed to state something.

when it comes to nationality, i don't think there's any need to distinguish. i mean, very often i watch an actor's interview for the first time and am surprised by his or her accent because i had thought they were the same nationality as their character, but not so. i don't see the problem with a filipino actress playing a vietnamese character any more than a french person playing an italian character, or a canadian for a german or whoever.
