part 363 paper snowflakes

It's... December! I can't believe it's almost the end of another year. Time is weird. Anyway! There's been a lot of neato Hetalia news in the meantime! That game (that I can't get working but will look at videos and screencaps of so I can play vicariously)! The image of the first doll! The musical promo images!! What are you most excited for?

Enjoy part 363!

Re: older anime dubs

There's an ancient dub of Rose of Versailles ("Lady Oscar") from the late Eighties/early Nineties which is pretty awesome because a) the network execs didn't realize most of those cheap "children's cartoons" they had just bought to fill up afternoon hours were actually more along the lines of "teenager shows" until the mid-Nineties and this dub is from earlier, so I saw the first run of Lady Oscar completely uncut and b) the italian dub actors were AMAZING. Again, anime was pretty new at the time and there wasn't yet a widespread market for dubbed cartoons aside from American ones like Bugs Bunny that were however a completely different thing, so they just went with the same dubbers they used for serious Hollywood movies and it shows. I still have trouble accepting Oscar's and André's voices aren't the original ones, that Italian first dub is just how they sound to me when I read the manga, too.

Then the network execs woke up, realized how SCANDALOUS it was, cut out the SCANDALOUS parts and redubbed it with voices that weren't nearly as cool :(

(I'm not the only Italian still obsessed with Rose of Versailles' epic first Italian run, ok?, there are still Lady Oscar fanclubs. Like I was looking for a scene in the anime in which Oscar and André talked and I found like fifteen AMVs)

One day I'll write one long and cool essay about the curious history of anime in Italy. It's actually kind of interesting.

50% OFF IS VERY STUPID AND VERY GOOD

as a general rule I don't watch the abridged version of shows I want to watch and vice-versa - I started on the AOT Abridged but it wasn't nearly as fun as the others

Until anon posted that article yesterday I thought Finland was full of tall mountains. :|a

I don't know why, but it just... sounded like a mountainous country.

I thought life in America costed like a gajillion more money than here. It turns out that not only that isn't true, a lot of things in America actually cost less.

I don't know why I got that idea into my head. It was probably a mixture of "well, they're rich" and "well, England??? England costs a lot?" and also "well they have to pay for basic healthcare and their tuitions are absurd, everything else is probably up to same standards?" and yeah.

Ahaha yes I love 50% off! It's one of the better ones.

Have you ever watched DBZ Abridged? It's easily my favorite abridged series, especially after the first few episodes.

no but England raised you so I thought you would be high-maintenance like him who wants you to take him to overhyped restaurants and make you pay in pounds, which is magical money that is worth more than all of the other money put together

but no you're one humble country boy who's ok with going out to a nice but cheap diner as long as you tip the waiter generously

IT IS SO SILLY AND SO ADDICTIVE

MMmh, DBZ Abridged does sound very cool, especially considering how huge and long-lasting the real series is - I could never get into the canon, so it's perfect for me. I will try that one as long as I have free time (I tend to binge watch a lot), thanks for the rec!

TIPPING GENEROUSLY

HELL YEAH

One of my mom's cardinal rules of examining first dates was to see how well the other person wanted to tip the waiter.

pfffft but we merry cans think the same about europe as a whole

because europe = fancy shit and rich folks

the fancy suits, the fancy bags, the fancy food and the fancy cars all come from europe

speaking of england i'm planning a trip there with friends and hollllly fuck why is everything so expensive. we'd assumed england was going to be slightly more affordable than the other, more exotic-sounding countries because... well, i don't know, maybe because they speak english like us?

Nostalgia's bit a few times over the last few years. I watched like 15 episodes of Escaflowne and 90% of Gundam Wing.

From what I remember, Escaflowne was pretty solid, though how it wound up on an after-school lineup is beyond me. Wasn't it pulled after like five episodes, though? Jesus, how did they not catch, like. Everything about it. Van vomits a full cup of blood in the first twenty minutes.

Going back to watch Gundam Wing, the script was dreadful and the voices were stiff and awful. I almost wonder if the original is better. ON THE OTHER HAND. The original Japanese doesn't have Scott McNeil. So. Hard choices. :|a

The only old anime that I rewatch a lot is Weiss Kreuz. And... the Weiss Kreuz dub is bad. Very bad. Almost legendary bad.

So, er. No. Not at all.

So you DID pull on his ears.

[The best way of finding out what he had been up to when he couldn't keep an eye on him. He should keep the cookies from you.]

Why wouldn't I know, I was that old too. But you know how it's said... Was sich liebt, das neckt sich.

[He wuvs you brother, even though you are a giant dick on... many days. ... But then the rest wants special treatment too. He will think of something though.]

Branplain? That almost sounds like Branflakes. And they're all you, so I bet all of them like being first.

[... Oh God, now that's awesome of him. Look at that smile he has there.]

... Danke. ... Want some too? I doubt I can eat them all by myself.

OKEY FINE I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE

"Hey. I know you're not going to understand me, but...for what it's worth, I really did miss you." He covers his companion's hand with one of his own. He doesn't really mean anything by it. He's just happy to be close to him again. He'd forgotten how skittish he can be: the hand snaps back. His companion looks to him, piercing eyes wide and cautious. He holds his hand clasped to his chest. ///BLAH BLAH NEED TO FIX THIS TRANSITION//
But after a moment, it's replaced facing up so that they're palm to palm instead. He hopes he can't see too well in the dark, because he's probably smiling like a complete idiot right now. "Yeah. It's good to see you again, too."

Time kind of falls to the wayside after that. He loses track of the seconds somewhere between the rhythm of their breaths and the pulses beating in their hands. He's probably even still smiling when he falls asleep propped up against the parapet's inner wall. [[He dreams he's being crushed alive by a giant...something or other. It wraps around him, wringing the air from his lungs. Its claws sink deep into his neck.]] It turns out his brain isn't far off in filling in the blanks between this and that -- he wakes up to find Lalli's face smashed up against his collarbone. They're still leaning somewhat upright. [more emphasis on rough nasty gravel??] And everything hurts beyond belief. Oh, he never wants it to end.

I'm working on about a million things at once, here. There's like... 16 things in my WIP folder. WELL, here's three. All different fandoms.

#1, Hetalia:

The last sheet. Japan lingered on it, taking in the lines, the sweep of the ink on the page. A rare drawing of Netherlands himself, sitting at his table, pen in his hand, looking out the window.

Japan set it down.

He took up his tea, and took up the letter again.

Netherlands expressed himself with brief words. But that was only because words were not his medium of choice. It was not words he used to say I am fond of you, or I miss you.

---

#2, A Redtail's Dream:

Door. Inside. Light. Warmth pressing to her icy face, her frozen cheeks, like the kiss she had wanted but hadn't received. Paju shut the door hard, nearly slammed it, and leaned back against it for a moment, biting her lip and screwing her eyes shut and letting the snow on her boots melt into the mat.

Something inside her was wound up too tight. Something she couldn't quite place, deep inside her chest. It was like a tightly-coiled spring, twisted so hard that it could break at any moment.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Fine, she thought. It doesn't matter. He's an idiot and it doesn't matter.

---

#3, SSSS:

"Hmm." Sigrun glanced at him out of the corner of her eye. Emil was staring straight ahead, out the windows, arms carefully folded over his chest in a desperate attempt to look relaxed, his expression carefully composed. But even in the dim light, she could tell that he was blushing.

So, Sigrun thought. How long have you been thinking that line over? It wasn't the worst one she'd ever heard, at least.
