THE progenitor of Japan’s imperial line, supposedly 2,600 years ago, was female: Amaterasu, goddess of the sun. But for most of the time since, all emperors have been male. This has exercised the UN’s Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. Recently it concluded that Japan should let women inherit the Chrysanthemum throne, too.

It is not clear what Emperor Akihito, who is 82 (and has a hugely popular wife), thinks about this. But the Japanese prime minister blew his top. Shinzo Abe leapt to the defence of a male-only line, saying it was rooted in Japanese history. The panel’s meddling, he said, was “totally inappropriate”. Cowed, it withdrew its recommendation that the law of succession be changed.

Personally, I do feel it should be up to Japan. It's not like the Emperor has any power anyway? But Shinzo Abe's opinion shouldn't be used as a proxy for all Japanese people's opinions, especially since he isn't all that popular.

Ultimately, what matters is how ordinary Japanese women are treated and what opportunities they have, not whether Japan can have an empress.

When do you think the UN should interfere if a nation has traditions that are discriminatory in some way?

i think they can advise as they wish but ultimately i feel the impression of an outside power imposing its values upon a nation/a culture is not going to get much cooperation, good will, or foster lasting change.

in the example above, i think it would go over better if there was a feminist or general group for equality within japan that was petitioning for a change to the tradition of male emperors, and then the u.n. stepped in to endorse and support that movement.

but i also think that case is comparatively minor and not as much a priority in the fight for women's rights as, say, ending the practice of genital mutilation or giving women the right to vote in certain other countries.

My book arrived today, I figured I'd sate the curiousity of anybody wondering.

It's a good artbook size, big with a nice weight, the quality of paper and color printing is very nice. It's about 73 pages of illustration collection.

I can't claim I remember every single picture perfectly, but as far as I can there isn't any new material except some extra horror game sprites (+ one alt outfit for Romania, Prussia + Turkey with mask on/off)

The other material is mostly old illustrations + lots of chibis.
(Including chibis from extra materials, like the CDs and so on)


If anybody wants me to check for specific characters or pictures I can try to take a clean picture/answer any questions.

I was thinking of getting an art book at some point - I have so little Hetalia merchandise, it's kind of sad given that it's been my main fandom for so long - but if I do I'm probably only going to pick one.
