Apart from searching AO3 or the like based on kink and reading every promising fic just for the sex/trope, do you actively read fics or look at art in a fandom that you aren't very familiar with? For example, I used to read tons of Sailor Moon fanfics when I was younger even though I had never read/watched it.

Not these days. Generally when I read fic (rather than original fiction) it's to have more of whatever canon I'm into; if I don't know the canon itself then there isn't much reason for me to care.

I used to read fic for anime that I hadn't seen - but that was back when it was difficult to obtain except via fansub bootleg, aha.

I do sometimes look at art for series that I don't know well, though, but that's easy because I consume it differently than written stuff. I do this for various Star Trek series (I've only seen TNG) and SnK (which I want to read/watch but wouldn't be able to handle).
